Round-up: Willian to Corinthians

Willian is set to move away from Arsenal, according to reports. Brazilian and English newspapers picked up the story very quickly. Most sources say that a move for the winger is possible before the end of the window. However, the deal is not done yet, and some factors may complicate the possibility of it happening.

On Sunday evening, Willian used his Instagram account to post a picture of him watching the Corinthians match. Less than 24 hours later, escalated rumours of Willian leaving Arsenal.

So let’s go around the Brazilian papers and see what they are saying.

Well regarded ESPN Brasil Journalist, Flávio Ortega went to his Twitter to say:

“What I’ve been able to gather so far: Corinthians has inquired about Willian to Kia [Joorabchian] and Arsenal to understand his situation. The player’s family wants to stay in Europe, and the window closes in 7 days there. For now, there hasn’t been an official offer, but Willian is aware of Corinthians interest.”

It looks like there is a real interest from Corinthians to bring the player back to Corinthians.

“More on the Willian case: Because the player has to be registered on the 30th of August -24 hours before the window closes in Europe- Willian, Kia and Arsenal would have to accept an offer from corinthians in advance”

Other articles speak about an impediment to the deal being done. It’s the player’s salary.

“A loan, with the clubs splitting the player’s salary, is something that can be done”, says Fábio Lázaro via Terra

His father even went to one of Brazil’s biggest sports websites to speak about Corinthians interest.

“Corinthians has always wanted him, but haven’t made an offer. It’s difficult but no impossible. If it’s going to happen is going to depend on whom is going to negotiate”,- he said in a phone call to

Other websites, however, say that a deal is ‘impossible’ with Corinthians finances.

“The club has no conditions to pay even half of his salary. This looks like this ‘news’ only benefits one person, Willian.”, said Cosme Rímoli TO R7 Esportes

Understandably, this is one that the Arsenal fans are desperate to see him gone. Willian’s transfer to The Gunners was associated with risks. And it proved to be one that did not work out how Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar wanted it to. However, it’s no easy task to see him out of Arsenal, and we’ll have to wait and see if he goes indeed.
